Kick-off: Tuesday 4 August 2026 Venue: Letná Stadium, Prague, Czechia Competition: UEFA Champions League, third qualifying round, first leg Time: 18:00 UTC
What is at stake?
Both clubs skipped the first two qualifying rounds and entered at this later stage. That means they are now just four matches away from reaching the main part of the Champions League, known as the league phase.
Lyon are hoping to return to the Champions League for the first time since 2020, when they reached the semi-finals before losing to Bayern Munich. Sparta Prague are trying to get back to the competition for the second time in three seasons.
Lyon's team news and form
Lyon had a tough end to last season. They looked set to qualify for the Champions League automatically through the French league but lost their final two matches and dropped to fourth place instead. That is why they now have to go through qualifying.
Pre-season has not gone smoothly either. Lyon started with three wins in a row, but then lost two of their last three warm-up games. The most recent was a heavy 4-0 defeat to Real Betis, which exposed some problems in defence.
Lyon also have a poor recent record away from home. They won only one of their last seven away matches in all competitions last season. That is a worrying stat ahead of a trip to a Sparta side who are strong at home.
On a positive note, Lyon have brought in Loïs Openda on loan from Juventus. He is quick, direct, and capable of scoring against any opponent, so he could be the difference for Lyon in what is otherwise a difficult trip.
Sparta Prague's team news and form
Sparta finished second in the Czech league last season, behind local rivals Slavia Prague. They started this season with a defeat, losing 3-1 away at Brno, but bounced back quickly with a 3-1 home win over Zlin.
Sparta have some injury concerns. Ondrej Penxa and Magnus Andersen are both out, which puts extra pressure on new summer signing Jonathan Braut Brunes to lead the attack.
The biggest positive for Sparta is their home form. They are unbeaten in their last six competitive matches at Letná Stadium, winning five and drawing one. In that run, they scored 12 goals and let in only three. That is an excellent record to lean on against a Lyon side low on confidence.
Head-to-head record
History favours Lyon here. The two sides have met six times before, and Sparta have never won any of those matches. Lyon have won five and drawn one. Still, past results count for less in a one-off qualifying tie, especially with Sparta in such good home form.
Tactical preview
Expect Sparta to sit in a solid, compact shape and look to hit Lyon on the counter-attack through their front three. Lyon will likely try to control possession, but their defence has looked shaky in pre-season, which Sparta will look to exploit.
With so much riding on the tie and a second leg still to come, neither side is likely to take big risks. A cautious, tightly contested match is the most likely outcome.
Prediction
Given Sparta's strong home record and Lyon's poor away form and shaky pre-season, this looks close. Lyon's quality, especially with Openda leading the line, should be enough to avoid defeat, but a home win for Sparta would not be a surprise.
Prediction (Acca tips): Sparta Prague 1-1 Lyon Confidence: Medium
